5 : Questions for Your Cat's First Trip to the Vet
You've just taken a new cat into your home, and it's time for kitty's first vet appointment. Whether your new feline friend is a kitten or an older cat, you've got questions -- lots of questions. Taking your cat to the vet isn't all that much different than going to your own doctor. You need to be organized and know what you want to ask so you get the answers you need. Read on to find out the top five questions to ask your vet, and you'll be on your way having a healthy, happy cat.

Cats are known for their amazing ability to keep themselves looking sleek and lovely with just a little spit. With all the preening, it seems cats have their grooming routine well in hand (or paw), but even the most conscientious primper sometimes needs a little help from a friend. A few questions for your vet will make the grooming experience enjoyable for you and your cat.
- How do I introduce a grooming routine?
- What supplies do I need?
- How often should I groom my cat?
- What do I do if my cat hates grooming?
- Should I give my cat a bath now and then?
- Will regular grooming prevent hairballs?

4: What Should I Know About Litter Box Training?
As a new cat owner, you probably think litter box training will be the biggest hurdle to overcome. Not so. A cat's natural instinct is to eliminate in sand or soil. Cats, however, have some pretty strong opinions about what makes them comfy when nature calls, and experimentation on your part may be necessary to discover your cat's personal preferences. Your vet can help you understand the choices available and can suggest some basic rules for successful litter box training.
You should ask about the types of litter boxes as well as the pros and cons of different types of litter box filler. Your vet may also have advice about the litter training process, including information about litter box location, multi-cat households and protecting yourself from litter- borne illness (especially if you're pregnant or have young children in the house).
Occasionally, your clever kitty will make mistakes, but if the slipups start to become a habit, ask your vet about possible underlying medical causes or discuss any stresses that may be contributing to your cat's "forgetting" when nature calls.

You're strolling down the cat food aisle of a grocery store. Scanning rows and rows of shelves, you see moist, dry, semi-moist, gourmet, popular and no-name brands. Panic sets in. How will you ever figure out what's best for your cat or kitten? Fortunately, your vet is ready with answers. Here are some questions that will help you to find the best food for your cat -- at least nutritionally. Your cat will let you know about the taste.
Food type: Should I feed my cat moist, semi-moist or dry food? Will my cat's food requirements change over the years, and do kittens or older cats need to eat a particular food?
Ingredients: Different cat foods have different ingredients. What should I look for on the label? Are there any groups that regulate what goes into cat food? What is a raw diet, and is it something I should consider for my cat?
Feeding Frequency: How much should I feed my cat, and how much water does kitty need each day?
This may seem like too much to remember, so be sure to bring a notepad with you each time you take your cat to the vet. Your vet -- and your cat -- will thank you.

The news isn't good: According to The Humane Society of the United States, "Four million cats and dogs -- about one every eight seconds -- are put down in U.S. shelters each year". Besides helping to decrease overpopulation, spaying and neutering your cat has some health and behavioral benefits, as well. Find out what you need to know about this surgery by asking your vet these questions:
- At what age can my cat be spayed or neutered?
- How should I take care of my pet after the surgery?
- What's the recovery time?
- Will my cat get fat?
- Are there any negative or positive health effects?
- What if I can't afford the surgery?
1: What Vaccinations Does My Cat Need?
When you get a new cat, you'll want to provide a healthy, nurturing home. One of the most important -- and easiest -- ways to keep kitty healthy and disease-free is with vaccinations. Your vet will most likely recommend the following vaccines, as they prevent the most common diseases in cats.
- Rabies
- Feline viral rhinotracheitis (a respiratory infection)
- Feline Calcivirus (another respiratory infection)
- Feline Panleukopenia virus (feline distemper)
Ask your vet if there are any adverse reactions to these vaccines and what you can expect when you get home, such as whether your cat will be sleepy or have less of an appetite. Your vet may also recommend other vaccinations to prevent diseases that are common in your area, especially if your cat spends most of the day outdoors.
Although it used to be customary to vaccinate annually, increasingly vets are tailoring vaccination schedules to individual pets. Talk with your vet about what's best for your feline friend.
