Look for the Symptoms
Just like your cat needs lots of attention for comfort, they will also need attention for you to know when something is wrong. Cats can’t talk, so it is important to watch your cat’s actions and habits to look for abrupt changes without known environmental causes. This is the best way to monitor your pet for cat illness symptoms. Also, single symptoms have multiple causes, so it is important to also catch all of your cat’s behavioral changes.
Common Illness Symptoms
Your cat throwing up is probably the most common cause of alarm in owners. Fortunately, as long as it only persists for a short time, throwing up is fairly normal. A cat’s digestive system is incredibly sensitive to over eating, food changes, and people food. These can all cause this problem. Only if it persists for more than a day, and it is followed by a cat loss of appetite, should you begin to worry.
Other cat illness symptoms can be caused by recent treatments such as cat vaccinations. These can cause many different complications in rare cases. Symptoms can resemble those of the target disease or an allergic reaction. Either way, a call to your vet should be made in this case. Cat urinary tract infections can cause very odd behavioral problems such as spraying, going outside the litter box, and reactions to pain while urinating. A feline UTI can be brought on by a number of causes, but is easily treated with antibiotics from your vet.
Symptoms can present themselves in very odd ways. A common cat illness symptom is just needing more attention. Just like us, they like to be comforted when they feel sick. Ignoring them can cause adverse behaviors. Marking and urinating outside their box are common tactics cats use to get the attention they want.
Major Symptoms
Some cat illness symptoms require immediate care. These are obvious and easy to see; shaking, shallow or heavy breathing, aggression, fluid discharges should be followed by, at least, a call to the vet. Your vet works to help animals, so an occasional call shouldn’t bother them. Most important, again, is to keep a close eye on your housemate. They get sick like us and need medical care and love like us too.
